  1. The Walters Prize is a award for New Zealand artists who have made an exceptional involvement to the visual arts in the previous two years, which honours the life and artistic legacy of Gordon Walters (1919 – 1995), the award was founded by the Auckland Art Gallery in 2002. The prize includes $50,000 and an all expense paid trip to New York to exhibit at Saatchi & Saatchi’s world headquarters.

    3. Saskia Leek: Yellow is the Putty of the World – Oil on Board
    4. Alex Monteith: Passing Manoeuvre with Two Motorcycles and 584 Vehicles for Two-Channel – Two channel video displayed on big screens

The jury members are of 2010 are:
    • Jon Bywater - Programme Leader, Critical Studies at Elam School of Fine Art, The University of Auckland.
    • Rhana Devenport - Director, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth
    • Leonhard Emmerling - Visual Arts Adviser, Goethe Institute, Munich, Germany, former Director, ST PAUL St, AUT University
    • Kate Montgomery - Director, Physics Room, Christchurch
These jury of experts have been observing exhibitions around the country. They met for the first time early this year to decide the four 2010 finalists.

The 2010 judge is the respected former-director of London's Tate Modern, Vicente Todoli will judge the Walters Prize 2010 and announce the award winner on 8 October.
Todoli was a prime mover in Tate's global success (which is now the most visited modern art museum in the world) From 1989-96 TodolĂ was artistic director for The Valencia Institute for Modern Art (IVAM), Spain, and before it opened he was their Chief supervisor. Throughout his distinguished career he organised and curated internationally renowned exhibitions of work by contemporary artists, making him the perfect choice to be this year’s judge.

Personally I would nominate artist Saskia Leek. To me work that is simple, clean and elegent give me as a person more appreciation. I am one for clean lines and curves and bold pastel like colours. Her strengths is somehow distorting various images. I liked the way she as a artist doesn’t have a planned starting point but instead starts off with other peoples art, found art, her old discared paintings, or odd images.
Like myself in some cases, Leek “follows her nose” and sometimes doesn’t know what she is doing until she is part way through the work to make sense. I reckon Leek excels in the placement and application of the paint and colour choice is very successful, it gives the viewer a peacefull and flowy feel.

  2. Here is also nice blog :) I am glad to read your opinion because Saskia Leek is my chosen artist to nominate for this year as well. I have already wrote down some on my blog but I didn't discuss that shown distorting various images. I don't know why I just talked about her colour choices but,, maybe her title 'Yellow....' impacted on my thought of more looking at it. Something like peaceful but also powerful by breaking images I like that. another thing why I like her work is that she trying to paint in frame it made more opened views, not just paint on the board.
